I Need A Good Dog Toy For My 2 Year Old Jack Russell Terrier?

A reader asked..
My Jack Terrier is a very enthusiastic chewer and I would like to find some dog that will take her at least a day or so to destroy. She tends to swallow a bit of the toy, so preferably something safe to eat.

Kong ball, best money you can spend. My beagle loves hers. saves on all the furniture and moldings around the house. Here in canada her’s ran about 25 dollors for a large one. But they last. And you can buy differant treats to put inside. Alley likes peanut butter the best keeps her busy for hours.

I agree….you can’t go wrong with any version of the Kong toy. My beagle is a very avid chewer and he hasn’t torn up any of the 3 different Kong toys we have for him.

When my Jack was a puppy, he chewed apart his toys as well…I gave up and began only using chew-proof toys. I now only use tennis balls, rubber chew toys, and absolutely nothing that rips, tears, has stuffing, or otherwise is too “fragile” for my Jack…they’re born hunters, so when they don’t hunt animals they hunt their toys instead.

OK store bought toys are great and I have a spoiled rotton boxer who I have bought almost every toy in the pet store for at one time or another and his favorite toy is an empty two liter or 20 oz coke bottle. Make sure you take off the cap and the plastic around the outside but he chases and chews on that thing and has more fun with it that any toy I have ever bought him at the store including the Kong

One word: Nyla-bone. Best chew toy known to dog. It is a flavored bone made of an edible substance. You can get super durable ones too. I would reccommend the chicken flavored one.

I have a great dane that loves chewing. I like to get her a type of smoked bone. They’re hollow but they have some sort of meat or whatever inside and little strips cooked on the outside that peel off. She loves them and my mother (a vet) approves. NO RAWHIDE!!! Animals choke on rawhide. The bones are big so it will take him a while and my great dane can’t chip off pieces of the bone to swallow so he should be safe. Great attention keeper in the crate! You can get them at Wal-Mart for like less than $5.

I see lots of people recommend Kong. Mine didn’t like it. I think maybe too heavy for him. I agree with the person that suggested the plastic bottle. Mine loves that too. He also gets lots of exercise chasing it. Then he settles down and we have a good night. GOOD LUCK!!

My Havanese gnawed right through his Kong toy. Have you considered getting a cat? Ours is definitely our dog’s favorite chew toy.

I know the feeling! This may not be the answer for a chew toy, but my 2 JRT’s love this. I put a hard rubber ring on the end of a bungee cord, attach to a rope, and hang from a tree. It is just at a level they can jump up and grab it in their mouths. They hang (bouncing all around) growl, swing, and as I call it, do their Elvis impressions. It is the funniest thing you have ever seen and it uses up both their energy and chewing tendencies at once. They love it.

Go to a local pet store and buy a heavy thick rubber bone. My dog loves to chew, and its his favorite toy. The other great thing about this kind of toy is that it cant get riped apart. You cant break it into peices so its safe for dogs! Its also good for their teeth. This sounds like a great toy for your dog. I hope I helped!
