Dogs receive the same benefits from CBD that humans do. This is due to the fact that they too have an endocannabinoid system (ECS) which is made up of receptors that CBD molecules bind to. At the time of this article, we know that the ECS regulates several of the most important physiologic pathways in the body which include:
- Cardiovascular health
- Pain response
- Gastrointestinal activity
- Maintaining bone mass
- Protecting neurons
- Hormone regulation
- Metabolic control
- Immune system mapping
- Inflammatory reactions
- Inhibiting tumor cells
The exciting news is that we are only at the tip of the iceberg with regards to our understanding of the endocannabinoid system. As research continues, so will our understanding of how full spectrum CBD oil can benefit both you and your dog.
What is the Correct CBD Dosage for Dogs?
If you’ve googled this question and became confused from all of the different answers you received… you are not alone. Some websites will recommend that you give your dog a full dropper of CBD a day, while others will suggest that you convert your animal’s weight into kilograms and calculate the dosage that way.
The truth is that there is no FDA dosage guideline when it comes to CBD oil for dogs. Until the FDA is able to run medical trials and continued research on CBD and other cannabinoids, we need to listen to veterinarian professionals and use our best judgement. Often times less is more when it comes to dosing your dog with CBD oil – just like with humans, all dogs respond to CBD differently.
Our CBD dosage calculations were created and supported by holistic veterinarians who practice in natural alternatives. The calculations are based on weight, so dosing a 15 pound dog will require much less CBD oil than a 100 pound dog.
Simply multiply your dog’s weight by the desired dosage tier to understand what the recommended dosage should be. For best results, we suggest dosing your dog twice a day (once in the AM and once in the PM).
Let’s say you have a 45-pound bulldog:
A low dosage would be:
45 lbs x .05 mg = 2.25 MG of CBD in the AM and 2.25 MG of CBD in the PM
A medium dosage would be:
45 lbs x .125 mg = 5.63 MG of CBD in the AM and 5.63 MG of CBD in the PM
A high dosage would be:
45 lbs x .25 mg = 11.25 MG of CBD in the AM and 11.25 MG of CBD in the PM
We recommend starting your dog off with a low dose for the first two weeks. You can monitor how your dog reacts to the oil and adjust accordingly. In most cases, our low dosage will offer the benefits your dog needs and keep them comfortable, healthy and alert. While it is good to understand the math behind the dosage calculations, you can always use a CBD dosage calculator for dogs which will break down the three dosage tiers and even tell you how many drops are needed to achieve those dosages amounts.
How Much CBD oil is too much for my dog?
Third party lab tested CBD oil is non-toxic for dogs. This means that regardless of how much CBD you give your dog, there is no fear or concern of overdosing. Although CBD is non-toxic, excessive dosing of CBD oil can lead to an upset stomach, nausea and sleepiness, so it is important to keep this in mind as you are deciding how to dose your furry companion.
Before you introduce CBD into your dog’s diet, please consult with your veterinarian to ensure that there is no conflict with medications they currently take.
