I have 2 shih-tzu’s. Age 10 & 12. They are lovely dogs, very loving and
loyal they truly are lapdogs. However, without proper training and
discipline they can be very spoilt, stubborn and demanding. They can be
very vocal at times, my older boy makes the strangest noises, almost like a
screaming baby mixed with a pig squeal.

If you are looking for an active dog which can chase a ball all day, the
shih-tzu is not for you! He would rather lay on your lap and be stroked.
They are generally great with children and other animals.

Please take the vet care into consideration before buying a shih-tzu puppy.
They can suffer with many health issues which are not mentioned in this
    video.
They can suffer from bad skin problems, one of mine has atopic dermatitis
which can get very sore and needs steroid medication, sometimes antibiotics
if the sores get infected and special creams and shampoos. He delivers dry
eye which means multiple eye drops per day.
They are bred to have a flat face to represent the chinese symbolic lion
statues and believe me, the breathing problems that come with this are not
something to be ignored. They will snore really loud and sometimes will
struggle to catch their breath, especially in hot weather or after
    exercise.
At the end of the day, ALL pure bred pedigree dogs are inbred to create the
end product of what they are today and the health issues are the result of
    this.

    It was not the British invasion of China that nearly wiped out the breed;
it was Mao’s Cultural Revolution, when family pets were declared decadent
and bourgeois, especially breeds associated with the old nobility. The
surviving dogs from which the breed was repopulated had been brought to the
    UK in the 1930s.

I just got one and little miss isn’t taking to her Crate, any suggestions
on how to make it better for her? She also whines to be held at all times
but I work and want her to be independent when I am not around, I have a
dog walker and when she is old enough she will be going to doggie day
    care.

I already own to GSD imports, dipshit. You try to make yourself sound like
a little smart ass, you might want to read the messages. Shih Tzu’s are
dumb and they serve no real valuable purpose. They are ridiculously hard to
train to do anything, including house training. my cousin has two of them
so I should know. She tells me all the time how dumb they are but yes they
are lovable. That’s the only purpose other have.

That wolf story is nonsense. The Shih Tzu is 10,000 years further from the
wolf than the larger nordic breeds more recently descended from wolves.
Anthropologists have traced them to the prehistoric “kitchen mizzen dog” an
ancient dog that lived off of the heaps where early man threw his edible
garbage, called “mizzens”. This is where cultural anthropologist aquired
much of what they know about man’s habits. This has recenly been varified
by analysing the DNA in the skeletal remains of these dogs.

By the 29th this month, my Shih tzu will turn four. He is a pure bred, and
has something called cherry eye. His sister got it too when she got older.
These are very good dogs, hypoallergenic too! (My mom has allergies)
