There aren't many things that are more fun than getting a puppy. But, the fun quickly dies once he's destroyed one of your favorite pairs of shoes. However, most of it can be avoided if you can learn how to train your puppy the right way. Proper training will lead to a well mannored dog that will be your best friend for years to come.
If you look around, you'll see that there are dozens of conflicting views on how to train a puppy. Whichever mether you pick, you should always keep a few basic puppy training rules in mind. One of the keys to effective dog training is to use positive reinforcement. Your dog will always respond better to that than to being scolded when he does something wrong. The second keys to puppy training is consistency and patience.
The First Steps in Training
No matter what you are trying to, you need to remember to reward him when he does it right. Some examples of good rewards are treats or verbal praise. Don't forget that it will probably take some time before your puppy learns what to do and what not to do. For example, your dog doesn't insinctively know that it is wrong to pee in the house.
Some areas to focus on from the beginning are house training, simple commands like sit and stay and leash training. These things will teach your dog some important things – primarily that you are the leader and he should submit to you. Your best bet is to make sure you do short training sessions that are full of fun.
If you don't start your training off right, later on you may find yourself having to re-train bad habits out of your dog. Make sure you take the time to train your puppy right. It will take a lot of patience and a lot of repetition before your puppy will catch on.
Should I Crate Train my Dog?
If you plan on leaving your dog alone for any period of time, crate training can be helpful. Crate training gives your dog a “den” to stay in when you are away. Crates can stop dog separation anxiety and protect the chewable things in your home while you are out. If you are having trouble housetraining your dog, you should look into crate training.
To train your puppy that his crate is his “den”, there are a few tricks. When your puppy goes into the crate, give him a treat and lots of verbal praise. You should never make him go into the crate when he doesn't want to. Anything that makes your dog dislike the crate should be avoided.
A Few Last Thoughts
As you know, an important part of training is housebreaking your puppy. Taking your puppy outside often and giving him lots of praise when he does the right thing is important. Punishment for not going outside isn't the right way to do it. Take him outside to the proper area and don't leave until he has used the bathroom. Give him a treat as soon as he uses that bathroom.
