Puppy owners often site house training as the most stressful training experience they have with a new dog. Certain dogs will quickly pick up on this training whilst other dogs will take a while to understand what is required. House training your dog is easier than you think! By following this straight forward method you can succeed with little stress and damage to carpeted areas.
First of all, it’s important to know that dogs will urinate or defecate where this has been done previously. If you had a dog in the past then odors will be present in certain areas and you must remove these where your dog might use as a potty. This is often hard in a carpeted area but has to be done to ensure a successful training conclusion.
Puppy pads—absorbent diaper-like disposable mats that are placed in a designated area of the house—are the absolute best way to house train your dog. If you’ll be using puppy pads, go ahead and have one ready when you bring your dog home. Position it in a spot that suits you and can remain. Certain puppies will instantly start to use these as the scent will attract them.
If you notice your puppy relieving him or herself in a particular place, move the puppy pad to that area. If you do not notice your puppy making a mistake, at the time it makes the mistake, you can do little but just clean up after it. Put your training pad where your puppy has been to the toilet and then carry your puppy to the pad, sitting it down on the pad.
If you happen to catch your puppy during the act, tell them “no” in a firm tone of voice, and move them to the puppy pad. It is important that you give your puppy loads of praise when you see it using its pad. You will be surprised just how quick your puppy will build the association with using the puppy pad and being rewarded. Puppies will look up to you as their pack leader and will naturally try ways to make you happy. This works to your advantage when training your dog.
If you’d like your dog to potty outside, begin to move the pad toward the door gradually, eventually moving it outside. It may take a few weeks to get your puppy to use the bathroom outside without his puppy pad. It’s an absolute must that you reward when your dog does get it right.
