Stop Dogs Barking

By Sandra Scott

A dog will bark for many different reasons. A dog will bark to alert you to the approach of an unfamiliar person or to let you know that a burglar has broken into your home. Other causes of dog barking are pain and fear. They may also bark to get your attention or in an attempt to intimidate you or other people.

Whatever the reason, we all agree that it can be extremely aggravating and seek ways to stop dogs barking. Many with dogs that bark constantly are charged with disturbing the peace. Thankfully, it is possible to stop dogs barking without just cause.

The best way to stop dogs barking is to train your dog when it is appropriate for him to bark. There are several options but the best technique is the proven reward/reprimand method. This method is both humane and effective.

Some dog owners try to circumvent obedience training with the use of an electronic or . The collar is worn by the dog, which is then activated when he starts to bark. When the bark collar gives off a small electronic shock, the dog is taken by surprise. Gradually, the dog barking stops as the dog associates his barking with a painful experience. I am of the opinion that the use of to stop dogs from barking is both cruel and inhumane.

Not all dogs realize that the uncomfortable shock is directly related to their barking; electronic collars should not be used for this reason and many others. They get used to the shocks and continue barking. Also, dogs with thick coats may not feel the electric shock if the prongs on the collar are not in touching the skin. In addition, just using an electronic collar to stop dog barking hardly ever works. Usually, optimal results are obtained by including dog obedience training.

If used correctly, a bark collar won’t hurt your dog, but it is still the opinion of some people that it may discourage your dog. For this reason, citronella collars are the choice of some people. Citronella collars produce a mist when dogs bark. The smell is disliked by most dogs. Once your dog understands that the foul smell is emitted when he barks, he will stop barking to avoid the smell. They are probably just about as successful as electronic collars.

The vast majority of vets and dog trainers believe that, although shock collars can be useful, they are no substitute for good dog training. In addition, obedience training does more than simply stop dogs barking. It also helps with other dog behavior problems.

The option of surgery to stop dogs barking is both drastic and barbaric in my opinion. Tissue is surgically removed from the larynx to stop dogs from barking. It is not unheard of for the dog’s bark to return, voiding the surgery. Thankfully, most vets oppose the surgical method to stop dogs barking.

In closing, I hope we have managed to convince you that the most effective way to stop dogs barking is with good quality obedience training. If you use a shock collar to stop dogs barking, you will also not be woken up when a burglar enters your home. A dog that has been given good obedience training will understand the appropriate times to bark and will also defend your family.
