Akc Recommends That You Train Your Yorkie

by Isabella Gibby

If my mother's yorkie dog cracks a bone he instantly drops it out on the plate and very carefully picks the food away from it. In the same way, my friend can give her dog a big piece of bone and tell him to eat it as long as it doesn't splinter.

When my friend wants to train his dog he uses bones, because his dog loves bones. If my friend's dog's bone cracks she drops it and won't touch it again, until she has it examined for safety. If your dog doesn't examine bones for safety I recommend checking them yourself, as an oversight can be deathly to your dog.

Train your dog to retrieve an object. Retrieving an object is another great skill to put in your dog?s bag of tricks. I think most dog owners should teach their dogs this trick.

Yorkshire terriers, who are territorial by nature, will guard your home with ease. You will find that most come equipped at birth to guard your home.

Larger dogs can be trained for retrieving an object with a dumb-bell, but a yorkie could be trained with just about any other light weight object. When the dog drops the object, rush to pick the object up and do so joyfully, in an excited manner.

This must be said with so much vehemence that the dog is egged on to such a state of excitement that he naturally barks. Directly he does so, praise him, and repeat this as often as is necessary for the dog to get to know that guarding is his job.

Dogs' nerves can be soothed merely by communicating to your dog what is to be expected. Look into your yorkie's eyes and tell them in a soothing voice that they have done well if they have pleased you.

Once a dog has been taught fierceness, the lessons are extremely difficult to unlearn. Never treat your dog unkindly.
