CUTE puppy Mabel was given just weeks to live after she was diagnosed with a rare congenital heart defect.
The 12-week-old rottweiler was born with Patent Ductus Arteriosus, a condition that affects the blood flow to the heart. She was given up by her owners after they learned about her serious illness and was picked up by the rottweiler welfare association.
Now the pooch is set for a bright future after undergoing life-saving open heart surgery.
Carole Bentley, secretary of the Rottweiler Welfare Association, said: “Mabel was brought to us a few months ago after her previous owners learned about her condition. They couldn't afford to pay for her operation, so we decided to help as much as we could.”
The charity launched a fundraising appeal for Mabel's operation and soon raised thousands of pound to pay for the surgery.
Carole, from Tean, said: “Luckily, a local vet was qualified to carry out open heart surgery, so she was able to have her operation as soon as she could. When she came to us her heart was visibly failing, so we knew we needed to work fast.”
Mabel, who is living at Carole's house, is now on the road to recovery. The dog even made a guest appearance at the charity's latest bucket collection at Tesco, in meir Park, on Friday.
Carole added: “She's got to have a heart scan in a month's time and we're hopeful she'll be given the all-clear. She's an adorable little dog and everyone who meets her loves her.
“She's been really good with her medication. She had to be restricted until her operation and she dealt with that. She's doing really well.
“We're hoping she'll find a new home in the New Year, but she needs to live with someone who is able to maintain her and meet her needs.”
Nick Williams, veterinary surgeon at Meir Park Veterinary Hospital, said: “Mabel has had quite a traumatic time. She was very poorly and was given a life estimate of just a few weeks.
