Well-Trained Golden Retrievers
With their golden coats and cheerful nature, trained golden retrievers make fantastic pets. Golden retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States, because they are beautiful, friendly, and intelligent. That intelligence means that they can be highly trained. You could, of course, train them yourself—but getting a retriever that has already been trained saves you lots of time and effort.
Golden retrievers are very smart, as dogs go. They are also confident and patient, which makes them excellent candidates for training. Golden retrievers are good-tempered and love to be around people, which make them eager to please.
Dogs are easiest to train when they are puppies, and some breeders may start training golden retriever puppies at as young as a month old. Pups are given cues before they are fed, such as a whistle or hand clap, which teaches them to respond to those sounds. A few weeks later, they begin receiving more intensive, individualized training, so that they can learn to sit, stay, and walk on a leash. They are also exposed to a variety of different environments, toys, people, and places, which helps them learn about the world and how to respond to it.
By eight to twelve weeks, puppies have usually become good at being well-behaved; they have learned verbal cues and what not to do. Beyond this age, trained golden retrievers may be matched with loving families, or they might be trained further. Some higher forms of training include good off-leash behavior, special tricks, or even training as service dogs. Golden retrievers are often used as seeing-eye dogs, therapy animals, or even search-and-rescue dogs.
With so many possibilities out there, it is no wonder that trained golden retrievers are so popular. They are friendly, look great, and can do cool tricks—and they can even provide services that people cannot do themselves. Getting a golden retriever already trained from a good kennel is a great way to add a pet to your family.
