Why is my German Shepherd “digging” in her water bowl?

Question by : Why is my ” in her ?
Everytime I put out a for her, she drinks half of it then throws her front paws in it and starts “digging” the out.
Sometimes she even tries fitting all four paws in. Of course it’s adorable but she’s making a mess and I don’t want her to do that when I bring her bowls in the house, which I havent done yet.
Shes only 4 months old, will she grow out of it?

Ironically I had a Kelpie who did this.. and a CAT aswell….
Yeah, she will most likely grow out of it.

    Btw, I don’t use a water bowl for medium-large dogs anymore, I just use a half-filled bucket! =P

As she’s only 4 months old my guess is she is just playing with the water. Try distracting her with a toy once she’s had her drink so she doesn’t think its fun to play with her water bowl too. Don’t react or make a big deal of it if she digs like this as it could re-enforce her behaviour.

If this fails give her a smaller bowl that she cannot fit her feet into, though you’ll have to make sure she always has enough water in there to drink.

Awe that is so cute, but yes, of course messy! She is probably just trying to play, Dogs usually love water. Maybe you can scold her (gently, of course) when she does that and see if it helps. She may grow out of it too, if she is still just a little puppy!

    Shes playing. (:
My GSD/Husky, who is also 4 months old, does this too, especially at the dog park.
Maybe getting a smaller bowl will help. My pup has a bowl about as big as his head which is 1/3rd of the size of the ones at the dog park. And he’s never dug in it.
