What is the best book out there for basic training of german Shepherd dogs? Mindy is 13 months now and I live 100 miles from any dog trainers. Would appreciate some suggestions. Thanx!

I really like Winifred Strickland's book Expert Obedience Training For Dogs. She is a breeder/trainer/competitor of GSD and has earned well over 200 obedience titles on her dogs through the years. She goes through all the basics in her book as well as a few cute tricks that can be applied to make the basics easier. The book is for training for competitive obedience but all training applies to life as well. Below is a link to it on amazon. If you order, make sure to get the fourth edition. That's the current one.
Update – I don't understand why the other answerer got a thumbs down unless it's about misspelling “shepherd”. The books by the Monks of New Skete are “The Art of Raising a puppy” and “How to be Your Dog's Best Friend”. I actually own both of them. They are very good books and I recommend them to anyone getting a new puppy. It explains a lot of the basic behaviors that are often misinterpreted by novice dog owners. For obedience work, I'd still go with Winifred Strickland's book but the Monks of New Skete books are great as well and you can get them cheap on Amazon.
