Dog park reopens; cause of canine illness undetermined

The dog reopened Thursday, as the state Department of Agriculture ruled out the virus veterinarians thought might be the cause of a mysterious dog .

said because whatever is making dogs sick isn't “a pandemic,” there's no need to keep the park closed.

Area dog parks temporarily closed nearly a month ago as a precaution, and the was canceled two weeks ago.

The dog park in Plain Township remained closed Friday, according to the administrator's office.

, a spokeswoman for the , said most of the samples from sick dogs sent to California to be tested for circovirus came back negative.

“We are back to the drawing table,” Hawkins said.

She also said the reports of dogs becoming ill in Michigan with circovirus symptoms subsequently would not be connected to the cases of the sick dogs in Ohio because circovirus is no longer something the Department of Agriculture is looking at.

Symptoms among affected dogs in Ohio have included vomiting and bloody diarrhea.

Veterinarians recommend dog owners monitor their pets and said, if they show signs of illness, to immediately take them to a veterinarian.
