St. Louis police are investigating the death of a dog found badly burned and chained to the gate of a house in north St. Louis.
Brownie, a 3-year-old terrier-shepherd mix, died Friday morning from organ failure as a result of the burns, said Stray Rescue director Randy Grim.
Photos showed Brownie’s fur burned away in places, revealing red inflamed flesh.
Police spokeswoman Leah Freeman said details of the investigation were not being released. St. Louis Police Department arson investigators and Grim were at the scene Friday. Grim said that a tree or bush was burned and that the burning dog apparently set the plant on fire, not the other way around.
Officials were alerted by Brownie’s owner, who lives in the 4300 block of Cote Brilliante Avenue. She said she heard her dog crying Wednesday night and went outside to find that he had been burned, according to a police department statement.
Similar incidents including a dog “thrown in the trash to die” and another dragged down Interstate 70 have attracted attention in the last few months.
