More than 150 dogs removed from an unlicensed breeding facility operation in northern Michigan last week have been placed with animal welfare organizations throughout the Midwest, according to an anti-animal cruelty group.
On May 23, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Michigan Humane Society assisted local law enforcement and an animal shelter in removing the dogs from JRT John’s Jack Russell and Shiba Inu Kennel in Lake City, an hour south of Traverse City, according to the ASPCA.
Some of the more fearful and unsocialized dogs were transferred to the ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center at St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in Madison, N.J., where treatment will improve their chances of adoption, the ASPCA said.
The animals were taken as a result of a civil case against the business. Earlier this year, WZZM-TV 13 said the Missaukee County sheriff’s department presented a criminal case to the prosecutor. Instead of filing charges against the kennel for not having a license, which would have resulted in a fine, the prosecutor filed an injunction asking a judge to have the dogs removed, WZZM said.
“Thanks to our accommodating partner shelters, we were able to find placement for all of these dogs in just one week,” said Kathryn Destreza, ASPCA director of investigations for Field Investigations & Response team. “These dogs have been living in miserable conditions their entire lives. We are excited to see them move on to shelters so quickly, and soon, to loving homes.”
The dogs, mainly Jack Russell terriers and Shiba Inus, were found living in outdoor enclosures with plastic carriers as shelter, the organization said. The dogs didn’t have access to clean drinking water and had little shelter against the elements.
