The Lowchen is a non-sporting breed that was once a valued companion of the European noblemen. The name of this breed literally translates “Little Lion” in German. This Bichon type dog weighs an average between 9-18 pounds, and stands from 10-13 inches tall.
The coat of the Lowchen is silky and soft. They are usually trimmed to look like a lion. Their coats are not thin and fluffy, but rather wavy with a combination of thick hair among the finer ones. This permits a flowing coat that is never frizzy. They come in all colors, brown included.
The playful Lowchen requires to be taken on a walk daily. They love going on daily jogs, and even hiking. They particularly enjoy off leash time wherein they will have the chance to run freely. They can be suitable for apartment setting provided that they are given enough activity and play sessions. Although a securely fenced area is great for the Lowchen, they can live without it as well.
Friendly and inquisitive, the Lowchen loves constant mental stimulation and daily exercise. If bored, this breed will tend to dig out of boredom. They are naturally playful, and they even love to be on their master’s lap. A devoted family pet, he is almost eager to please all the time. A comical and good-natured pet, this breed gets along well with other pets. They are suited for all families wanting to have a delightful household pet, and may be kept in any setting, large or small, as long as they are given enough exercise.
The Lowchen makes a great pet for families with children. They are generally friendly and happy, both playful and active.
Daily brushing is needed to keep the coat of the Lowchen in great condition. Most owners would prefer taking this breed to a professional groomer, though. Since clipping can be tricky, particularly those for the show ring. Bathing should only be done when necessary.
The Lowchen is highly intelligent, and can easily be trained given the proper training methods. It is important to monitor this breed as puppies. Once they are seen with bad behavior, they should right then and there be corrected. Punitive punishments should not be given to this breed. Remember, they are eager to please, so punishing them will only make them feel worse. Consistency is highly crucial for this breed. Most trainers advise the use of crate training for a few months ensuring that they have already been housetrained.
The well-balanced strongly built Lowchen has a mixture of placid soul and playful spirit. Delightful, charming, and fun-loving, these characteristics make them excellent companions. They have outgoing and positive dispositions.
