DOGS are being stolen from backyards and used as bait to blood more aggressive breeds before they are forced to fight in illegal gambling rings.
Six animals were taken from a single street in Nelson, in Sydney's northwest, in just two days recently. By the end of that week, more than 20 dogs in the immediate area had also been stolen.
Many dogs have also been taken from nearby Londonderry, South Windsor, Box Hill, Riverstone and Pitt Town.
Hawkesbury MP Ray Williams said there were too many dogs reported missing for it to be considered a coincidence.
“This isn't the first time dog fighting has reared its ugly head in the rural areas of Hawkesbury,” he said.
“When a dog disappears you can usually assume it has escaped and run away but when there's been six in the one street then you know something else is going on.”
Mr Williams said all breeds were targeted by the thieves, who “stalk” their dogs in nearby parks and outside homes before taking them.
“These bastards normally like the more aggressive dogs like staffys or cross breeds but they will still take the little ones as well to bait and blood the more ferocious ones before they get into a ring,” he said.
