1. It is a very good idea to take your coonhound on long walks outdoors. The reason you want to do this is because it not only makes the dog comfortable with being outdoors – important for raccoon hunting, but it helps them bond with you. They will be in a fun environment where you can teach them what you want them to know. They will be much more receptive outdoors.
2. Look at enrolling your dog in obedience classes. Coonhounds can be difficult to train and having a professional take over the coonhound training can make things much easier on you.

3. If you are going to take your coonhound hunting, then you need to get them used to the sound of a gun. The last thing you want is them running away because of the loud noise.
To prepare them for the loud noise, set up your coonhound's crate outside. Lock them into the crate and then fire a gun in the opposite direction of them. They may panic at first but with your reassurance they will calm down. This is the most important part of coonhound training for raccoon hunting.
