The originated in Scotland in the 1600s. They have been called Black and Tan Setters and Castle Setters, but in the early 1900s it was formally changed to Gordon by the . These dogs came to the United States quite early (in the 1800s) and were one of the first breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club. Back when this breed originated, they were used as a bird setter and retriever for hunters. Today, they often serve the same purpose, as a companion and retriever for hunters.

While these dogs are great retrievers and highly regarded by hunters, they are not fast or light. They are slower than other in the Sporting Group, but they still do their job well. When they are not used as , they serve as great family companions. They are lively and enthusiastic members of the family. They make good protectors of the home because they are protective in nature and wary of strangers. They will alert their family members of any strange circumstances around the home.

The is a fairly high maintenance dog breed. First, they need a lot of hard exercise every single day. They are active dogs and a short walk is not sufficient. Long walks, a long run, hikes, or strenuous playtime in a yard or open space would suffice. Second, their long, straight, hair be brushed every two or three days to remained untangled. They also visit the groomer often for professional upkeep.

The most common health conditions that plague this dog breed are hip dysplasia and gastric torsion. Hip dysplasia is a condition caused by the malformation of the hip joint. It is usually treated with surgery.

Gastric torsion is a life-threatening condition where the stomach twists over itself. If not treated immediately with surgery, the pet will most likely die. Both of these conditions are expensive to treat. Many pet owners opt to invest in pet insurance to help them pay for any surgeries or other treatments that may otherwise be out of their budget.

If these dogs are well taken care of and treated for all health conditions, they can live between ten and twelve years old.

Daycare for dogs is a concept that is becoming more and more popular among the working population. Prior to the development of pet care, animals were left home all day, often penned up in cages, locked inside houses, or fenced in yards, left on their own to entertain themselves or cause trouble as they see fit. Many an owner has come home to a destroyed home, chewed up shoes or an escaped dog running free in the neighborhood. You can avoid this by taking advantage of services like Pet Sitting in Glen Cove.
