The is one of the most sleek and elegant breeds in the world. They originated in Hungary in the early 18th century and were known for their ability to quickly cover think ground cover when trailing game. Hunters loved that they were fast, but close-working, and that they could not only point out and retrieve the hunter's kill, but were also great at trailing.

Because of their elegance, they became a favorite breed for barons and warlords. Unfortunately, they almost died out after World War I, but re-established their presence during World War II. The breed found its way to the United States in the 1950s and the finally recognized the breed in 1960, allocating them to the Sporting Group.

Their personalities them a perfect fit for a with children, as they are gentle, affectionate, and sensitive. They do have a lot of pent-up energy, however, so any who chooses this breed will need to be active and make sure their dog receives plenty of exercise. If they do not have an outlet for their energy, they can become overly excitable and even destructive. It is a good idea to take these on a long jog daily, as well as give them plenty of opportunity to run around outdoors – in a yard, for example.

Their sleek coats require little care, just an occasional brushing to remove dead hair. However, they are prone to a few serious conditions, including hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and lymphosarcoma.

Many Vizsla owners choose to invest in pet insurance to help guard their wallets against the high cost of veterinary care associated with treated these conditions, as well as any instance of the dog becoming accidentally injured.
