Originally from the Island of Madagascar. The breed name derives from the French word “coton” meaning cotton, and the port of Tulear Madagascar. Tulear was a popular port of merchant ships sailing the Indian Ocean and it is believed that around the fifteenth or sixteenth century, European merchants were introduced to Madagascar several dogs Bichon-type companion. It is likely that the breed evolved from crosses between the Bichon and others. It is assumed that by their beauty and affectionate personality, these dogs were offered to the King and nobles. In the seventeenth century, the Coton de Tulear was adopted by the tribal monarchy “Merina” and was forbidden for people who do not belong to royalty own the breed. this gave him the title “The Royal Dog of Madagascar.”
Used as a companion dog, this friendly dog loves long walks, open space and the company of his master.
