A frightened dog hampered attempts to rescue its owner after they both slipped at a waterfall in East Sussex.
Rescue teams called to Ecclesbourne Glen, near Hastings, on Monday evening were prevented from getting close to the injured man.
Both the man and his dog had fallen down the waterfall but the animal would not let anyone help them.
Two specialist dog handlers eventually removed the dog and its owner was airlifted to hospital by helicopter.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency said the dog handlers were transferred to the scene via the Hastings inshore lifeboat.
The man had a suspected broken leg and head injuries.
Dover Coastguard’s senior watch manager, Gordon Wise, said it had been “an extremely unusual rescue”.
