Students Shine in Essay Contest

There is a special place in Donovan Woodham's heart for local history. The eighth-graders grandmother still owns a few acres at the pre-Civil War freed-slave settlement known as Timbuctoo, off Rancocas Road.

It made great inspiration for an essay contest. (Here is a link to an service in the UK. Check it out if you need help with an essay for a contest or writing in general).

My grandmother still lives around there, the township student said. Its a cool place. A lot of people have tried to buy it from us.

Donovan recently took first place over nearly 100 Westampton Middle School students, writing an essay about the importance of Black History Month. He was among four youngsters who were honored last week at the bimonthly meeting.

Joining Donovan were second-place winner Malcolm Stanley, third-place winner Morgan Gallagher and special mention Joey Stellwag. The four won certificates of appreciation from the township, and T-shirts and gift cards provided by TD Bank and Mayor Carolyn Chang.

I was so pleasantly surprised to receive nearly 100 entries, Chang said. “I was so impressed by the work that was done by these students. Obviously, they are aware of the historic importance of Timbuctoo.”

Timbuctoo became a settlement in the mid-1820s by African-Americans who were freed from slavery and sought to establish a community where they could own land and build churches and schools.

It contained as many as 20 houses, but was abandoned decades ago. A team of archeologists from began excavating the site a few years ago and providing outreach to local schools about the findings.

Kearns Junior High eighth-grade student turned a normal writing assignment about Martin Luther King in his English class into an award-winning essay.

Pacian was one of six contest winners in the state out of 645 entrants in the contest. Winners were announced by the State Office of Education at a luncheon at the Canyons School District Support Center in Sandy in January.

“I enjoy writing, especially about a man that has done such good work in the world,” Pacian said. “I like being able to put my own thoughts onto paper about issues that I still see going on today.
