Q&A: How do I cut my dogs nails?

Question by Jones: How do I cut my nails?
Originally I bought one of those electronic nail trimmers (or nail filer it should be) but she was afraid of those and ran away. So I went and bought a traditional dog nail clipper to try to cut her nails, cause they're too long and mess up the carpet.

But she keeps running away when we try to clip her nails.

So… how do I get her to sit still???

Here is what I do. Not sure what kind of dog you have, but I have a mastadane. It usually takes 2 people for me to clip his nails, we will wear him out first, playing and running with him, then when hes pooped, and just relaxing we will cut his nails. I also have plenty of treats when I do this to divert his attention, and keep him occupied. If worse comes to worse, you can always take your dog to the groomers, or vet and have them do it. You may also want to ask your vet if there is anything you can give your dog to mellow them out a bit. I know I had to give mine benedryl, to keep him mellow when he had to get stiches in his ear to prevent him from shakeing his head. Good luck

vets work, but i cut mine when my dogs sleeping. after a long day of playing or just being somwhere that he’s not used to really wears him out…so i snip away while he’s sleeping! since my dog was a puppy i’ve always handled his feet so he was used to it because i was told that it’s an area where they generally dont like to be touched…its worked so far

If you have never done it on any dog, the best thing to do is to go to the vet and let him/ her show you. When I get my first dog over thirty yeas ago that’s what I did, the vet explained everything to me and showed me what to do. Bring in your clippers and ask the vet or vet tech to show you how it’s done.
