Q&A: What breed of dog would be good with cats?

Question by Carole: What of dog would be with ?
I have 2 somewhat shy cats. I would love to get a dog (and preferably a big one). Is there any particular breed that gets along best with cats…or any special way to introduce the dog into the home w/o causing too much stress on the cats?

I have a beagle and 2 cats and they are great friends. In fact the cats sleep in the dog house with my beagle. He's really gentle with them and even shares his food.

It’s easier to research which breeds are generally awful with cats, like I did years back. Wish I remembered the few–largely they are high prey-drive type dogs. I had 2 cats first, then got a puppy. Keep the puppy in a crate when you can’t watch him or when you want time with your cats. I also kept pup on a leash, so when he became “too much dog”, for the cats, I had control. I said “Leave that cat alone” so much, that I joked that my dog wondered “What’s a catalone?” Next time, I’m just saying, “Leave it!” I allowed the cats on the furniture, but not the dogs, which is ignored when I’m gone, now, but did keep them separated. I also put a pet gate in whatever doorway I wanted to provide a safe area for the cats to run to, as dog gained more freedom. I never brought the pup to the cats, they came in their own time to look over the pup—standing in front of crate or peering down from chair. I have a large dog—an Australian Shepherd. They are highly trainable, and my cats like her. (The lab I was keeping was terrible w/ my cats, but he had no early exposure with them, and that is the key, I believe!) Dogs like cat poop, due to high fat content in it, so you’ll need a system for managing this. Also, you’ll need a plan to keep dogs out of cat food, which is not good for them.

Most larger dogs do well with cats. Even mixes. If you want a puppy they will probably get along with anything, but your cats may not like something hyper running along. If you want one that’s past the puppy stage, I would go to your local pound or humane society and ask some of the people who work their how well they get along, you will be surprised how much they know about them.
I know gray hound rescues actually put a certain color collar on the dogs that get along with cats. You will also probably have more problems getting your cats to get along with a dog they you will the dog with the cats. It can take cats 2 months to get used to the idea of a dog in the house. I have 2 cats and 2 dogs(one is a big mutt, and the other is a jack russel), they get along great.
    Good Luck.

research the breeds and try to stay away from a running prey dog. like shepards, greyhounds, beagles and bassets. you can get them to like the cats but the first little while will be chaos as the prey instinct will make them want to chase the cats if they run.

I think any dog can be good with cats as long as the cat is there first, and your cats are. When the dog is raised with them, they can be the best of buds.

I have a cat and a golden retriever. The dog is 2.5 years and they do all right together. At first they chased each other a lot and the cat normally won. Now they sleep head to head and pretty much leave each other alone.
