Question by Glutton 4 Punishment: Why do service members need to print their ssn on their ID tags?
I'm ordering some military style dog tags since they're much cheaper than the fancy ones from the local pharmacy (which are literally 6 times the price) and the format currently used supposedly has the SSN printed right on it. Seems counter intuitive since lost dog tags could mean identity theft here on U.S. soil, right? So does anybody know why the SSN is used?
Not like I have to worry about it, I'm not in the service due to medical reasons. It's just curiosity.

yepâ¦the military no longer issues âservice numbers' and long ago converted to using social security numbers only as âservice numbers'â¦therefore, it's on the id tagsâ¦can't remember exactly when this change took place, but it was in the 1970'sâ¦sorry, i see your point, but that's the way it isâ¦

I ordered two tags. They are typical pet tags with the engraved info on both sides. All info is correct. They were mailed within 48 hours of order placement and I received them in less than a week.

I got two pink hearts. Each have the dog’s name and my cell phone number on them. I love them. They work well and help me feel secure that if they get lost, someone would be able to call me. Some people complained about the quality. They are definitely not the most high quality in the world but are comparable in quality to their Rabbies tags and City licence tags. I love them. 🙂

This shipped the day after I ordered it, and arrived 5 days later. I ordered 1 small, purple round (with paw print) tag, but actually received 2. One had my dog’s name, my phone number and my full addressed with zip code as requested. All the info was correct. The second had her name printed large, as well as my phone number. I have uploaded images for reference. I don’t know why I got an extra for free, but I’m not complaining. 🙂
These are about what you would expect from the picture. They aren’t the greatest quality in the world, but who would expect that for 5 bucks? They aren’t really bendable so they should hold up just fine to normal wear and tear. The engraving is clear and deep. This is exactly what I wanted. They are 7 centimeters across, just under 1 inch and came with a small, sturdy ring for each tag.

Thus, you need some kind of unique number to identify people, so SSNs it is.
