Question by Ellen: How safe are dog muzzles? What is the best solution for a panicing dog?
My dog has severe panic attacks during thunder storms. We had a nice crate for her but she really hurt her teeth breaking out of it and then destroyed the wooden sliding door to the laundry room. We are not sure about drugging her and our vet is over priced. But which is better? A new crate and a muzzle for stormy nights or drugs? Us being with her sometimes helps, but this is for when we may be gone. Any thoughts?

I would not recommend Leaving a dog muzzled when you are not home.
My newest dog was afraid of fireworks, which made last 4th of july a bit rough. what worked for me was to carry around his favorite treat and ever time we heard a firework go off I would give him a treat. Pretty soon he stopped cowering when he heard them and started running over to me, tail wagging, excited for his treat. I'm hoping this year that the treats will be unneeded.
You could try doing something like this and see if it helps.
Also remember that being fearful and scared takes a lot of energy. Whenever you know a storm is coming, exra long walks and lots of exercise before hand should help a lot. A tired pup is a calmer pup.
You also might want to look into getting a thunder shirt. A lot of people swear by them for dogs with anxiety issues. http://www.gundogsupply.com/thunder-shirt-gray.html other places sell them too this was just the first link I found.

I think muzzles should only be used as a last resort. I like Tygerlyli’s suggestion. You could do something like that or other ways to keep him calm other than using a muzzle.

If a muzzle is needed, this is sure the one to go to! I have a 90lb pit bull that has been very overpowering and acts aggressive, really wants attention. People run, at least now they feel more secure, and they can pant, drink and eat with this muzzle, very important!!!!

|much needed item,
I have a 100lbs German Shepherd dog and she is a bad dog (aggressive), so I had to purchase a muzzle that will fit without hurting her and without her taking it off. I ordered (many months ago)this muzzle in Large size and I still use it on her on daily basis. The plastic/rubber material it is made of is soft and the same time very hard , looks like unbreakable. She is able to only eat and drink water through it (but is unable to get to my shoes and the carpet, and cables). The muzzle has saved me both mentally & financially, it is very well designed, she has no way of taking it off. I love the product and would recommend to anyone who owns a big bad dog 🙂

|Excellent idea but yeah …it could be a little less expensive. Even at $50 you’d make a profit and sell many more.
if this muzzle would be lighter, it might also work for two house male cats who keep on fighting each other and giving each other nasty bites
