Question by Alex: How to get a cat to not try to go through a dog door?
i live in a house with a small dog door for dogs up to about 25 lbs. if i get a cat are there ways to prevent the cat from copying what the dog does and going out the dog door? (don't worry about the dog, he's gentle towards cats and i will be keeping a close eye on them for the first few weeks of introducing them.)
ANYWAY please tell my ways to prevent the cat from trying to go out the dog door thank you!

Well if your dog does not ABSOLUTELY need it then just ductape the door shut.

Not really. Cats are smart. If the cat sees the dog going in and out they’ll figure it out pretty quick. Even without watching the dog, they’ll probably figure it out pretty quick. You’ll have to keep the dog door inaccessible to the cat if you are going to continuously keep it open and don’t want the cat out (which I think is smart). There are cat friendly fences, which keep cats confined to the yard. That could be an option, but it may not be feasible for everyone. Google it if your interested.
You can buy a dog door that comes with a little device that you attach to your dog’s collar. The door will only open for the device, keeping your cat safely inside.
