We've all seen it – the that is strolling down the block in a nice little outfit. Usually these are small that have a cute little outfit on. However, not all dog clothing has to be frou-frou. In fact, there are more practical articles of clothing on the market than simply cute clothing. Whatever type of clothes you choose for your dog, make sure that it is at least comfortable for your dog to wear.

Look for signs of discomfort in your dog, such as scratching, shaking, walking oddly, or ears back and tail tucked under. If your dog is not comfortable in clothes, and it's not a necessity, dog clothing may be out of the question for your dog. Your dog may need dog clothing if they are a small dog who shivers easily, a thin dog, a short haired dog, or an elderly dog. These types of may have a harder time thermoregulating their bodies. A dog coat or a dog may help in these cases.

Another time a dog may need clothing is for certain weather conditions. When it snows, a jacket and booties might be needed. When it rains, a rain coat can keep a dog from needing to be blow dried every time he comes in. When it's nice out, and you take your dog to the lake or near bodies of water, you may feel safer if your dog had a life jacket on. You can read more about dog clothing choices here.

Something to keep in mind, though, when giving your dog clothing is that there is a slim chance your dog may be allergic. Contact allergies are not incredibly common in dogs, but are a possibility. If after giving your dog clothing to wear, they begin scratching a lot, the clothing fabric may be the culprit. Do not continue using if you think your dog has a contact allergy.

If the scratching continues, there is a possibility you dog is allergic to some other item, such as food. You will want to eliminate possible sources of allergy and contact your vet if this is a possibility. Click here to learn more about allergies.

Allergies aside, there are many articles of clothing available to dog owners and their beloved dogs, from costumes to accessories. It's nice to have fun every once in a while, but always make sure you keep an eye on your dog when he is using an article of clothing. Keep this in mind, and you and your dog can have a wonderfully long life together.
