If it's from the house to the outside (unlike one of mine which is from the house to the garage), you need to be concerned with two things – wind and unwanted critters. The manufacturers deal with both issues by using magnets. Other than that, It's simply a clear piece of plastic. You can do it.

Im certainly no builder so cant give much help there but we installed a (bought) dog door for our new puppy (7 years ago) and it was sturdy and solid – made from metal that was painted brown – however the dog refused to use it no matter what we did – we then got another little dog only this year and she wouldnt use it either so we bought a cheap plastic one with a clear door they can see through – the older one still wont use it but the younger one is a pro at it now – I have a feeling that because they couldnt see through the old one it was like a solid object – so my only tip for you would be what ever you make the door bit out of make sure its see through and also make sure you install a device to lock the door when you dont want the dog being used (like the gates are open so you dont want the dog in the yard at that time etc)

    Good luck with it 🙂
