Article: Dog Obedience Training – Do It Yourself

by Preben Olsen

You need to create a common language between you as a owner and your to get a solid and trustful relationship. This may only be achieved by good dog , which means that you start to understand your dog and its needs. With the right dog you'll make sure that your beloved dog always responds in a positive way to your commands.

By starting to use the best there is, you'll help your dog to create the best responses to the stimuli – and therefore using the right dog course will be of great benefit for both you as owner and your dog(s). I'll suggest you look into one course I'm going to reveal for your shortly.

First I want to give you a little more knowledge about dog obedience training types:

Reward based dog obedience training
The most common and easy to put to action is the reward-based dog obedience training where commands given to the animal and properly executed are rewarded. Usually these rewards are caresses, a toy or as most often food. (Dog crackers etc.)

The dog associates a specific positive behavior with certain rewards and starts acting to get more of the wanted reward. Behavior patterns develop along these lines as dog obedience training pursues a mutual understanding between pet and owner. Basically this dog obedience training means teaching a trick that leads to a reward: scent detection, fetch commands or even criminal apprehension.

Leash dog obedience training
The latter is considered to belong to the traditional dog obedience training used at first in military facilities due to this training's effect on getting the dog to obey in all kind of situations. The leash dog obedience training has more advantages than the food reward in such practical purposes, since this leash finds better adaptation to the task or mission the animal has to face. The collars bring mild or even hard correction, yet, make sure that you don't use it ineffectively.

The leash dog obedience training teaches the animal to obey to collar control. You will need to remember that the leash is just the first step into developing the skills to get the dog obey under no matter what circumstances and relying on other tools as well. This type of dog obedience training establishes the hierarchy or the leadership in the dog's life and the relation you develop with the dog very much depends on this aspect.

Professional dog obedience training – or do it ?
You may hire a professional in dog obedience training, but you have to be an active in the process since you are the one to spend most time with your dog. This means you should learn the basics, and hopefully a little more.

There exist a course for you as a dog owner that I really recommend. You'll find free tips to start with dog obedience training here

Watch some of Vinny Love's basic obedience skills. I rescued him from a high-kill shelter with dog aggression issues, and have been training him myself for the past 2 years. I didn't raise him from when he was a . In fact, I know nothing of his history. He's not purebred. And he didn't have the perfect manners, in fact he had aggression issues! However, with training, he was able to transform into a great dog with wonderful manners. I see tons of awesome purebred Retrievers, German Shepherds, Australian Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Border Collies, and Jack Russell Terriers doing stunts and obedience but Vinny and I are proof that mix-breed shelter can do it too, EVEN the ones with behavior issues! Our goal through these videos is to not only showcase Vinny Love's talent, but more importantly, show the world that there are MILLIONS of remarkable animals just like Vinny being euthanized and KILLED in animal shelters worldwide. If Vinny and I have even inspired 1 person to adopt his/her next animal through our videos, we've done our job.

Thanks, he’s almost 11 and didn’t have any chance of getting adopted. Now he’s mine and no one will ever get any more chance of having this lovely friend 😉 I’m also doing bitework with him, he’s such a good student, doing all the best he can to please his master. He’s the greatest! But I have to admit, Vinny is better trained 🙂 Can’t keep his attention for such a long period. He can perfectly do 30 steps in attention but not like you do, I love it! 🙂

Again, I’m so glad to hear you adopted him! I don’t know when you adopted him, but most people do not take a chance on older dogs – most are euthanized very quickly at shelters. I have a soft spot for seniors & special needs pets <3

He has truly come such a long way from how he used to be. People who never knew him beforehand can’t believe he had any issues either although he still gets tense during dog-to-dog introductions. I know his limits, boundaries, and we work together to build his social skills on a daily basis.

@MusicLoversUtd I would recommend teaching your dog using a long lead first before walking a dog off-leash.

So happy to hear that you are looking into adopting your next dog. And yes, working with shelter dogs will give you a tremendous amount of experience working with a wide variety of dogs! I don’t have any formal training experience and don’t read any books/sites, but there are various trainers on YouTube who have amazing training tutorials. Good luck, and keep me updated on the adoption!

@MusicLoversUtd If you have any specific questions, please send me a PM. I recommend always practicing recall inside the home first, then venture into the backyard, front yard, then eventually to large open spaces like parking lots and parks. I always teach my dogs the sit, down, and stay along with recall. Good luck!
