Question by hurricanehick: how can I get my dogs to use their new dog houses?
I have 2 dogs who spend about 1/2 the day outside. I purchased 2 dog houses for them. neither will go inside. one is 3 years old and the other 2. they will not even go near them

they are house dogs… if they are only outside a couple of hours,, they may use them if it rains during those hours… if not don’t worry about it.. plant shrubs near them and make them part of your decor

Try leaving your clothes in their houses. (Make sure the clothes are something you don’t mind throwing away, since they will get dirty) Your scent may help make them feel more comfortable and secure in their houses. I tried this when I bought my indoor dog a new house (to be used inside). It worked!

Make sure the houses are comfortable and put some of their favorite toys in the houses. Also you can either put food in them and show them there is food or make a small trail of treats that lead to the houses, do this for a few days and they will be used to going into them to get the treats, so then just take away the treats and they will still go in them and find that they are quite nice.

They are unsure of what those are. You can do a couple of different things. One, just let them be, I bet on their own they will discover the joys of having a dog house, it takes time. Secondly, you can feed them in their houses. To a dog, and most people, food is love. If you put a dog in a stressful situation, but give them food, special treats, etc, that situation is going to become great to them! All because of a little ole food. So you can put a meal out there, or a special toy, such as kong stuffed with peanut butter. Doing that a few times might make that dog house the best thing in the world!

You can’t force a dog to go into his house if he doesn’t want to… I agree with the other answers; make the houses cozy, and wait until they figure it out themselves! Good luck! ?

Feed them inside the houses for a few weeks. This is guaranteed to work

Hi. I used regular asphalt roofing shingles for the houses that I build. They’re available at all hardware stores. I use a 3-tab shingle. They come in a bundle and should run about $15-$17 per bundle. I made the legs out of pressure treated 2 x 4’s. Thanks and good luck!

I do build and sell these on the side. If you’re interested, please let me know what size dog you have and some specifics on what you would like in a dog home. I can work you up a quote based on that information. Thanks.

Is an ok doghouse no I take that back it’s a good dog house I don’t think the dog will need the light but it was a good intention. Oh what bothers me is the door. I can see a door on the side of the doghouse. All good classic house have the door in front of the house not on the side

what type of wood this is?? my chihuahua told me to make one for her.

    • donbot1000
    • July 8, 2012

The wood is simple pine. The siding is a beadboard type siding. Your chihuahua’s house wouldn’t have to be very large! Thanks.
