Because dog collars don’t break away and every cat I have ever had has gotten their collar caught on something (my cats no longer wear collars for this very reason – and don’t worry, they can NOT get outside, they’d have to learn how to open three doors).
Yeah, they’ll fit, that’s not hard to figure out. BUT…Cats need what is called a “break-away” collar. These generally have a piece of elastic in them. Cats are climbers. If the collar gets hooked on a branch or something, they can hang your cat or strangle it to death. With the elastic piece in the collar, it would slip off. Spend the extra buck or two, get a collar made for cats.
Also, good luck even getting the cat to wear a collar. The first thing the cat does is figure out a way to get out of it. They could give Houdini lessons in getting out of a straight jacket!!
No, you “can” – you are “able to”, but HIGHLY UNADVISABLE because dog collars have no “breakaway” latch on them as they don’t need them, whereas cats most certainly do.
Cat’s need a breakaway collar so if they get hung up on something by the collar, the collar will come off, whereas the dog collar would choke them. (You know how cats love to climb things, explore; they could easily get a dog collar (non-breakaway) cause on the edge of something and then die by choking.
This is why you should never put a dog collar on a cat. Of course, you “can” do it, but it would be putting your cat at great risk for death.
ADD: To merlen: You can get your cat a harness – those you can use either a cat harness or softer dog harness as they don’t go around the neck, so if a regular cat collar does not fit your cat, I’d suggest getting a harness. They have them for both dogs and cats, the cat ones are generally more flexible and softer, but guessing you could find a softer puppy harness – just be sure it’s comfy for your cat.
You can. It’s just marketing. My cat is probably about a foot and a half long (not counting head or tail) and is 20 pounds. His chest measurement is about 20 inches. So his collar and harness are made for a medium dog. They don’t make cat collars big enough for him. He’s not fat, I think he’s probably just bread with some sort of wild cat, because he’s massive and still growing. The people that market the products want you to believe there is a difference so you will buy what they want you to.
However, don’t put a dogs flea collar on a cat. They are given different types of medication and it can make the cat sick.
