Question by wallabie22: How serious is a dog ear infection?
On my dogs annual checkup the vet said that my dog had a bacterial ear infection. I haven't noticed her ear bothering her at all. She has been acting perfectly normal. The vet gave me ear drops to put in both ears for the infection but since I have started giving them to my dog two days ago she has not been herself. She has had an upset stomach and just seems really tired… shes usually pretty energetic. I am going to call the vet but I was wondering if I should continue the meds or what?

Some ear infections can get bad enough to make your dog deaf. Most meds will have some sort of side effects so I'd say keep giving them until you get her to the vet.

If the vet scoped the ears and looked down inside, they would be in a good position to tell you if there is an infection the ear.
The next step is to clean out the ear by flushing it, and to give you medicated drops to put in the ear which prevent the bacteria from growing and causing the dog additional discomfort.
Problem is you don’t sound like the dog exhibited classic ear infection symptoms. You are now putting drops in the ear, but your dog is now not acting normal.
Stopping the drops for a day would not endanger the dog. If the dog is having a reaction to the drops for some reason, that would be a problem.
Stop the drops, and wait until your vet is available to consult with. You may need to purchase a new medication if this is the case.
Good Luck!
this is EXACTLY what just happened to my dog.
well the vet said dogs ears shouldnt smell at all and my dogs did and it was yeast.
he was also put on eardrops as well as pills of some kind because he had belly raash
when we called the vet she said to stop the med IMMEDIATLEY! so make sure you do
still call but yeah
my dog also has allergies so that could be another problem…
hope it helps:)
It’s as serious as with a persons ears! If not treated, the dog could go deaf. Your dog is fighting off an infection and will act similar to we do when we are sick. I hope your dog gets better soon. Do call the vet and tell them what is happening in case your dog needs further treatment.
Did the vet do any tests / swab the inside of the ear / swab and look under a microscope? Dogs can have allergies to medications too – I would suggest that you stop the medication immediately and wait to talk to your vet. Make sure that he confirms what the AND soy products and her ears were constantly infected until I found a food that was free of both – which was not an easy ordeal! Good luck!
