The question of how often you should feed your dog is one that many first-time owners often struggle with. The problem isn't helped by the fact that the amount that may be ‘right' for your dog isn't necessarily the amount that the dog would choose to eat. Dogs will quite happily eat (almost) anything that is put in front of them, and it can be very easy to overfeed your dog though giving in to ‘pester power'. To be sure that you don't end up with an overweight dog that's unhappy, uncomfortable and prone to other health problems, there are a number of factors to consider.
How old is your dog?
Age plays a crucial factor in determining the correct amount of food to give your dog. It will also dictate the type of food you give. For a growing puppy, plenty of protein, a certain amount of fats and a good blend of vitamins and minerals are essential to healthy growth, bone development and building a strong immune system. Older dogs will need a different balance of vitamins to maintain peak condition.

What breed?
The breed of dog will often dictate what type of food you give them, and how much. For example, some larger breeds may need a high calcium diet when they're young to develop stronger bones, whereas small breeds will require less food than a larger dog.
How active is your pet?
A lively, active dog that burns off a lot of energy will require more food than a more sedentary animal. But even here, be aware that you are not overcompensating and giving an active dog too much food.
Giving Your Dog The Right Diet
Once all these factors have been taken into consideration, you can then use your judgement to ensure that your dog is receiving the right amount of food. Rather than generic brands of dog food, choosing a specialist dog food such as Eukanuba, James Wellbeloved or Arden Grange can ensure that not only are you giving your dog the right amount of food, but that food is nutritionally beneficial, tasty and healthy too.
