Perhaps the most defining characteristic of the Dachshund is its body shape. This characteristically lively dog is long-bodied, with a deep chest, short legs, tapering muzzle, and long ears. The Dachshund is included in the hound group of the American Kennel Club. Bright and affectionate, the Dachshund is a wonderful, loyal pet, and a great companion dog, the Dachshund is intelligent, active, and fiercely loyal to its master. As a bonus, the Dachshund is naturally free from any “doggy” odor.
Dachshunds can be directly traced back to the 15th century in Germany. Most experts do agree that the German people are responsible for much of the breeds early development. The name ‘Dachshund’ originates from the German word ‘dachs’ meaning badger (badger hound). Although Dachshund is a German word, it is rarely used in Germany, where the Dachshund is known most generally as the Dackel or Teckel. The modern Dachshund is a product of European breeders, and contains portions of German, French, and English hounds and terriers.
The most common type of Dachshund, the smooth coated, is the originally type. The wire-haired and the long-haired was achieved by crossing the smooth-haired with other breeds. The wirehaired dachshund is covered with a uniform thick, short outer coat of broken appearance with wiry, coarse, and harsh hair. The long coat Dachshund is the most glamorous of the three types, and is described as the sweetest member of the breed.
In appearance, the Miniature Dachshund really is just like a dwarf version of the standard Dachshund. It is often more adapted to living with a family in smaller spaces in urban environments than its larger relative.
The Dachshund is generally long-lived and healthy but is subject to some genetic diseases, including slipped disc syndrome. The normal lifespan of the dachshund is approximately 12 to 15 years.
Longhaired, wirehaired and smooth varieties differ in both appearance and temperament. If your dachshund is sharply punished this can lead to “submissive urination” and cowering, which can be a very tough problem to resolve. They can be rash when chasing prey and therefore caution should be exercised if the Dachshund is allowed to run off leash. The Dachshund is good with older children as long as it has been socialized with them.
There is something almost regal about the air of the Dachshund, and it carries itself very confidently. They can be a tyrannical dictators, and rule your home out of fear and respect. Or, bright and affectionate, the Dachshund can be a wonderful, loyal pet. The dachshund is one of the most colorful of all breeds; and is active, hardy, courageous and independent.
If you’re looking for a breed full of personality, loyalty and love look no further.
