Although many pets do well on one feeding daily, the dog is among the breeds at risk for torsion, an often fatal, always dangerous digestive problem that occurs chiefly in deep-chested animals. The sign of torsion is bloating where the stomach becomes filled with gas. If not noticed early, dogs would have a twisted feeling on their stomach. For a dog in the early bloat stage, gas can usually be alleviated by having the stomach pumped out or through an slit in the side. However, once the stomach twists, surgery is the only option if the dog's life has to be protected.
The Morris Animal Foundation, which has done complete research into torsion, advises owners of at-risk breeds to feed two or more small meals as a day rather than one huge meal as one way to minimize the possibility of the dog's falling victim to this dreaded ailment. Exercise before and after meals should be curtailed as well. Our own dogs typically are fed in their crates and forced to have quiet time before and after their twice-a-day feedings.
Healthy Dog Foods
I had an experience about my dog's feeding. Since I wasn't able to observe him all the time, I didn't know that he was eating an tremendous amount of dog foods and biscuits. When we went to his doctor, the vet told me to give my dog peroxide. This is to stimulate vomiting so he could empty his tummy and prevent possible bloating. This was through, to no avail. The dog not only failed to “empty out,” he digested what he had eaten, seemed to savor peroxide as an after-dinner toast and kept that down as well. Lucky for my dog who is also prone to have torsion (but is not a Basset Hound) was able to tolerate the peroxide and had survived from the probable risk.
Other dog owners select to feed their dogs with kibbles soaked in warm water for about fifteen to twenty five minutes. This allows the food to swell outside the stomach rather than in it. We have adult dogs in our house that are allowed to eat their meals up to two and a half cup of kibble, twice daily.The amount of food your dog needs will depend on his size and activity level. Since puppies are in the procedure of developing their bodily growth and are doing more activities than adult ones, they are in need of more dietary requirements.
Feeding your dog must also comply an arranged schedule similar to housetraining rules. Pursuing other dog owner's technique when feeding their dog is alright but sometimes it also depends on your schedule and lifestyle. Dogs are adaptable and you can make changes in the routine; try to feed him in small amounts. In time you find a schedule to efficiently feed him in the right hours, cleave to it as habitual as you both can.
