I bet they just called it a dog or maybe bulldog in 1885 when it was taken. They didn’t come up with breed standards mentioned in the comments until much later. The title of the photo says it all. This is a small, brindle-marked dog posed on table in studio!

Looks more APBT then SBT to me. And you’re right Meetzorp, she very well could be. Bostons did come from the "pitbull" group of dogs.
Question the year the exposure is too short.
Chef.dogg its not a pitbull. Its a staffordshire bullterrier.
