Top 8 Ways to Protect Your Dog from Fleas

Protect Your Dog from Fleas

Fleas can be harmful to not only you but also your dog. Flea bites can be extremely itchy and can keep your pet in an irritated state. They can also lay eggs on the dog’s body, which can later hatch and complicate the situation. This is why it is extremely important that you take all necessary steps to protect your dog from fleas. And below, we look at eight ways that can help you do this.

1. Keep the Home Clear of Fleas

The first thing you should do is to clear your home from fleas. You should never tolerate any flea in your home. Just one single female can lay almost fifty eggs per day. As such, one or two fleas running around the home can quickly turn into a colony that infects it. This is why it is important to exterminate them. Vacuum the floors and clean items like carpets, furniture etc. on a regular basis. And once in a while, hire a professional exterminator to wipe out the flea in your home. And by keeping your home free from fleas, you can protect your dog from being affected by them.

2. Know the Symptoms

You should also have a clear understanding of how dogs can be affected by fleas. For example, if you see your dog feeling itchy at any bite marks, then it is highly possible that it might be a flea bite. In addition, it the area of the bite has developed a red spot, then that is further proof of fleas. If you keep this in mind, you will quickly know when your dog is getting affected by the flea, and you can take the appropriate actions to remedy the situation.

3. Wash the Bites

When you do see any flea bites on your dog, it is important that you immediately provide some relief to the pet. Use an antiseptic soap and wash the bite marks thoroughly. This should tone down any itchy feeling the dog might be feeling. Plus, it also avoids chances of infection. However, be sure that you only use an antiseptic soap that has been approved by the dog’s veterinarian since some soaps might not work well with your dog’s skin.

4. Bathe the Dog with Flea Shampoo

It is also recommended that you use a flea shampoo when you are bathing your dog. To get best results, you should first wet the dog’s coat with water. Next, apply a good shampoo and work it up to form a lather. Keep the fog covered in the lather for about 10 minutes so that the shampoo has enough time to kill the flea, larvae, and the eggs present on the dog’s body. Once the 10 minutes are over, wash the dog with water and ensure that the shampoo is completely removed. Ideally, this process should be done at least once every two weeks.

5. Do Monthly Treatment

Once a month, you should carry out a spot on treatment on your dog, preferably using Advecta. Its active ingredients will ensure that your pet is not only protected from flea, but also other pests like ticks, mosquitoes, lice, and so on.

6. Clean Your Pet’s Living Area

Always keep your home clean. If they are living outside, then ensure that there are no trash deposited anywhere near them. Plus, if there are any wet spots near the place, then treat it immediately and make sure that it is dry. If the dog lives inside the house, then clean out all carpets around them. This should ensure that no larvae or eggs are spread around your pet.

7. Use Flea Traps

You can also set up flea traps inside the home to attract and trap all the fleas around. These traps work by attracting the flea into an adhesive paper onto which they get stuck and die. It is estimated that flea traps can catch around 90% of the fleas in a home, which makes them a highly effective method to get rid of these pests from your home.

8. Mow the Grass

If you have a lawn, then you should know that fleas usually hide in the grasses. As such, it is essential that you mow the grass on a regular basis. Keep the grass short, and you should be able to control the flea population pretty well. You can also spread some nematodes on the grass. This will kill off all the flea and larvae that hide in the grasses. Plus, nematodes are non-toxic for human beings, which make them a very safe option for killing the flea.
